Rethymno and the Surrounding Coast

Rethymno is where we would usually start when looking for a beach setting for an intimate wedding. Its central position makes it convenient for couples and guests arriving through either Heraklion or Chania, while the surrounding area offers plenty of coastal and countryside options.

The coastline around Rethymno includes both long sandy beaches and smaller bays, with areas such as Panormo and Bali offering different possibilities for a small celebration.

The advantage is not simply the scenery. You can combine a seaside ceremony with a private villa, a small restaurant or an intimate dinner nearby, without having to build the entire wedding around a large venue.

Chania

The Chania region is another beautiful option, particularly for couples staying in western Crete. There are spectacular beaches and smaller coastal settings throughout the area, but for an intimate wedding, we don’t necessarily recommend choosing the most famous beach. A quieter and more accessible location can create a much better experience than a famous beach that is crowded with visitors.

Heraklion

The area around Heraklion also offers options for couples who want to stay close to the airport or are based in the eastern part of the island. Coastal areas such as Agia Pelagia and Lygaria offer sheltered bays and can work well for smaller seaside celebrations.

What About Southern Crete?

The south of Crete is spectacular. The landscape is more rugged, the coastline feels wilder and there are some incredibly beautiful beaches around areas such as Plakias and Damnoni.

However, we are more selective when choosing exposed southern locations for a wedding ceremony. Wind is an important consideration for any beach wedding in Crete, and conditions can vary considerably depending on the exact location and day. A beach that looks perfect in photographs is not necessarily the right place for a ceremony with flowers, candles, fabrics and guests.

For us, the location has to be beautiful and practical.

When planning a small beach wedding, there are a few things that matter more than simply having beautiful scenery.

Privacy

A small wedding feels very different when you are surrounded by crowds of beachgoers. The exact location and time of the ceremony can make a significant difference.

Wind

This is one of the first things we consider when selecting a beach. Wind can affect everything from the ceremony setup and flowers to candles, fabrics, sound and, of course, the comfort of the couple and guests.

Accessibility

Some of Crete’s most beautiful beaches are difficult to reach. That might be perfectly fine for a day at the beach, but less convenient when you are arriving in a wedding dress with guests, flowers, chairs and photography equipment.

The atmosphere

Do you want a completely secluded beach? A beautiful seaside restaurant? A private villa overlooking the water? The right choice depends on the experience you want to create, not simply on how beautiful the location looks in a photograph.

There is no required number of guests. It can be just the two of you, with a ceremony, photography and dinner afterwards. It can be a celebration with your closest family and friends. Or it can be a small destination wedding for around 10–20 guests.

One of the biggest advantages of keeping the wedding small is the freedom it gives you. You don’t have to choose a venue designed for a large celebration. And you can design the setup and build the day around the experience instead.

What Can You Combine With a Beach Ceremony?

A beach ceremony doesn’t have to mean spending the entire wedding day on the beach. For an intimate wedding in Crete, you could have:

• a seaside ceremony followed by a private dinner;
• a sunset ceremony and dinner at a nearby villa;
• a simple ceremony for two followed by a couple’s photoshoot;
• a small beach ceremony followed by drinks and dinner at a seaside restaurant;
• a beach ceremony combined with a few days of celebrating with your guests.

This flexibility is one of the reasons intimate weddings work so well in Crete.

The location is only one part of the planning.
